San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward is grieving the tragic loss of his daughter, Amani Joy, who passed away just weeks before her second birthday. Ward shared the heartbreaking news on Tuesday, October 29, via Instagram, expressing his sorrow alongside his fiancée, Monique Cook.
“We are devastated that Amani Joy, our lovely newborn girl, died early on Monday,” Ward wrote. “Her joyful spirit made us smile from ear to ear, and she was the best blessing we could have asked for. She instilled in us the values of patience, trust, and optimism. She truly displayed courage and strength for us. She triumphed over hardship early in life and was constantly joyful, beaming up every room with her smile.”
Amani’s journey was marked by significant health challenges. Diagnosed in utero with a heart condition and Down syndrome, she was born five weeks early and underwent heart surgery before the age of six months. Despite these hurdles, Amani’s resilience and vibrant personality left an indelible mark on those around her.
Earlier this year, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day, Ward shared a touching tribute to Amani on Instagram. “I couldn’t have hoped for a greater blessing than Amani Joy Ward,” he wrote. “I now see that Down syndrome is really a gift from God, whereas before I thought it was a disability. I’ve learned patience and how to let things go by being Amani’s father. Although we had no control over whether she had Trisomy 21, we did have influence over how we felt about it.”
The 49ers organization also released a statement, offering their condolences and support to Ward and his family. “Charvarius Ward’s beloved one-year-old daughter, Amani Joy, passed away suddenly, leaving the 49ers family devastated,” the statement read. “With her charming personality and infectious laugh, Amani genuinely embodied happiness and made everyone around her happy.”
Ward’s heartfelt words and the outpouring of support highlight the profound impact Amani had on her family and community during her short but meaningful life.
